Food Bank/Soup KitchenFood banks reduce hunger by providing low or no-cost food for low-income or displaced people. May serve meals, provide ingredients for home cooking, or deliver to housebound people.

Green Building/CommunityBuildings or communities that use water, energy and materials efficiently, and maintain healthy indoor and outdoor environments. Sometimes referred to as a “sustainable building,” “sustainable design,” “green architecture,” or a “LEED-certified building.” (LEED stands for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification).

Habitat Restoration SiteArea where the functional aspects of a given ecosystem are being restored for animals and plants such that the habitat is returned to a natural, self-sustaining ecosystem.

Hiking TrailheadsEntrance points for the community’s favorite hiking trails.

Historical SiteInstitution, building, monument or unmarked historical area with special historical significance that contributes to the community's sense of place and environment.

MuseumCultural institutions that focus on history, art, science and other enriching subjects for education or leisurely enjoyment.

Native Plant GardenA garden filled primarily with flora that is indigenous to the region. Native species require less water and care than exotic imports, usually attract more birds, bees and butterflies, and help the cycle of life stay in balance.

Park 'N Ride/Transit CenterParking lot with convenient access to public transportation or a SunTran transit center.
|
|
PermacultureA site that implements permaculture, an ecological design system for sustainable land use based on the patterns found in nature. Permaculture incorporates features such as rainwater harvesting, native plants, and gardening/food production.

Public ArtPublic art for the community to enjoy and celebrate. May include sculptures, murals, outdoor exhibits, monuments, or temporary performance art.

|
Public LibraryLoans books and media, saving resources while spreading knowledge from a building that may be a landmark in the community. Public libraries serve as important gathering places and provide free community information and resources, internet access, lectures, and exhibits.

|
Public Park/RecreationGreen space that offers a place to relax and play outdoors. Typical uses are picnicking, sports, hiking or jogging paths, playground equipment and may include a lake or other water feature. Some parklands are publicly-owned and free; others might charge admission.

|
Rainwater Harvesting SiteSites that collect and/or store rainwater for on-site use. This can be done through earthworks such as basins and swales or with storage in a cistern (tank). Use of rainwater reduces the consumption of potable water and decreases downstream flooding.

Recycling CenterDrop-off site for materials that can be reprocessed or refilled. Includes businesses that buy or collect recycled materials.

Reuse ShopA place to purchase, sell and exchange reusable items such as second-hand, thrift, or charity shops.

Sunrise/Sunset ViewingWonderful public place to relax and enjoy the sunrise or sunset.
